The compact SUV and crossover segment has seen robust growth in India, with buyers looking for a perfect medley of practicality, comfort, and modern features within an affordable price bracket. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx and the Hyundai Venue are among the best-selling names in this arena, with the two cars catering to different audiences but being closely matched in terms of pricing.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx, a stylish crossover in the Nexa portfolio, brings in bold styling, efficient fuel economy, and premium features to attract tech-savvy urbanites. On the other hand, the Hyundai Venue has cemented its presence as one of the most versatile compact SUVs, offering a commanding posture on the road, diesel powertrain options, and the latest safety technologies, including ADAS.

In this comparison, we will look at design, performance, features, safety, pricing, and overall value to help buyers decide which of these two is a better fit for their lifestyle.

Design & Dimensions

Maruti Suzuki Fronx is designed as a crossover rather than an SUV, but mixed with urban elements. The bold grille, muscular bumper, and coupé-like sloping roofline give the Fronx a road presence, distinguishing this model from conventional hatchbacks. Sharp LED DRLs, sculpted bonnet, and neatly flared wheel arches give a sporty stance to the overall vehicle design, thereby placing it as an attractive offering for young buyers. The interior also feels modern, practical, and space-efficient for passengers. Its stance is slightly lower than other SUVs. With this, it is easy to climb in and out, giving the feel of a more urban-friendly vehicle.

In contrast, the Hyundai Venue goes the more traditional compact SUV route. Vertical proportions, strong character lines, and its signature split headlamp set-up further highlight the SUV's look. The Venue stands tall and has boxy elements in its design, which create an imposing stance. Such characteristics are the very reasons most customers in this segment look for in a compact SUV. Inside, the Venue offers a comfortable and neat cabin layout with sufficient space for both front and rear passengers. The slightly boxier shape also improves headroom with practical boot space, thus enhancing family-friendliness.

When it comes to footprint, the Venue is a little taller and boxier, hence leading to the SUV advantages, while the Fronx is sleeker and sportier with its crossover silhouette. Hence, the Fronx may be preferred for sporty and youthful design enthusiasts, while the Venue may be a better fit for those who seek a more upright SUV feel with practical proportions.

Engine & Performance

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is powered by two types of petrol engines, the first being a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine generating approximately 89bhp and 113Nm of torque, and can be mated to a 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox, primarily tuned for smooth power delivery and fuel efficiency, especially suited for city commutes and a bit of highway runs. The second one is a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 99 bhp and 147 Nm of torque and is offered with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. This turbo unit surely makes it a bit sportier by giving brisk acceleration and highway manners, thus making the Fronx so much more entertaining for enthusiasts.

Well, the Venue does have a wider engine lineup to give buyers some options. It comes with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 82 bhp and 114 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. For a bit more punch, Hyundai does offer the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 118 bhp and 172 Nm of torque, coupled either to a six-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This turbo petrol certainly offers great performance, rapid gear shifts, and refined driving dynamics, especially at high speeds. The Venue, with its 1.5-litre diesel engine delivering 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque with a six-speed manual transmission, makes it much more versatile for buyers looking for long-distance efficiency along with strong torque delivery.

Fuel Efficiency & Range

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx benefits from Maruti's efficiency lineage. Its naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine offers 20 to 22 kmpl, depending on whether you take the manual or AMT variant. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol is a tad less fuel efficient, giving out around 18 to 20 kmpl, although this number still seems respectable considering the added performance. The 37-litre fuel tank capacity allows the Fronx to offer a supple range of over 600 km on the 1.2-litre version (and a little less on the turbo), thus making it convenient for fuel increment trips to the city or out of the town and towards the highway.

The Hyundai Venue, despite being flexible with its engines, is not necessarily the most economical on every front. The 1.2-litre petrol does about 17 to 18 kmpl, whereas the 1.0 turbo-petrol yields approximately 18 to 20 kmpl-equally competitive with the Fronx's turbo unit. The ace here is the 1.5-litre diesel engine, offering 22 to 24 kmpl and making it extremely nice and economical for long-distance commuters. The Venue diesel variant, with a slightly bigger 45-litre fuel tank, provides further assurance of a long driving range, comfortably exceeding 900 km between refuels.

Features & Technology

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx offers all the features extracted from the Baleno and is ready to fight head-on with rivals. It gets a stunning 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment system to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, along with an Arkamys-tuned sound system. Higher variants get heads-up display, wireless charger, and 360-degree camera, which are all found in greater proportion in this segment. Security technology offers up to six airbags, ESP, hill-hold assistance, and ISOFIX mounts, thus ensuring the family has all the extra peace of mind one can have. While the upgraded model does not have an advanced driver assistance system, the Fronx concentrates on practical tech and comfort features.

Quoted as the benchmark in connected car technology, the Hyundai Venue comes along with an 8-inch touchscreen system, driving Bluelink connectivity, over-the-air updates, and Alexa/Google voice integration. Premium features like Arkamys sound systems, ambient lighting, and power adjustment for the driver's seat are bundled into the Venue's trim tops. It also has six airbags, ESP, and hill-hold assist safety features that are equivalent to those of its Fronx counterparts; however, it goes a step further to offer Level 1 ADAS features on select variants like forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and driver attention monitoring. This gives it an additional edge in technology terms when it comes to buyers against the tide with the latest safety tech additions.

Safety & Comfort

The Fronx from Maruti Suzuki must be built on the Heartect platform and is intended to be a mix of lightweight efficiency with structural efficiency. Safety features include an optional six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, a hill-hold assist, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors. Finally, the higher variants include a 360-degree camera. The Heartect platform still hasn't been crash-tested by Global NCAP. It has, however, been criticized and praised for robustness, so some buyers might consider that too. It can comfortably seat four adults with well-cushioned seats with rear AC vents, and good legroom. Unfortunately, for taller passengers in the rear, this sloping roofline slightly compromises their headroom.

The Hyundai Venue is marketed as a compact SUV and has been better placed on safety scales with a robust build feel and a decent 4-star rating of ASEAN NCAP on the model that has been sold in other markets. It also offers the same six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill-start assistant, and, besides that, rear parking sensors. On higher trims, ADAS features further enhance safety. Comfort is one of the strengths of the Venue, as it provides upright seating with generous headroom and decent under-thigh support for passengers. It sets up a really taut suspension that is meant for urban usage. The ride is very smooth over most surfaces but maintains good stability while on highways.

Colours & Road Presence

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is built for appeal with youthfulness; hence, the various colours suit this design. The colours offered are Nexa Blue, Opulent Red, Arctic White, Earthen Brown, Splendid Silver, and Grandeur Grey, with dual-tone combinations on higher trims. The coupé-like stance with a sloping roofline and bold grille offers a sporty character to Fronx, which distinguishes it from the hatchbacks and compact SUVs. On the road, it offers an air of stylishness and modernity to cater to younger buyers who want something different from a conventional SUV. The Hyundai Venue adopts a more traditional compact SUV approach, but its upright stance and boxy design offer it great road presence. It comes in Phantom Black, Typhoon Silver, Polar White, Fiery Red, Denim Blue, and Titan Grey, with certain dual-tone options. The father's tall proportions and squared-off edges enhance its SUV-ish look, appealing strongly to family buyers wanting a confident yet mature design.

While Fronx is all about the style quotient, with massive individuality with sporty crossover styling, the Venue gives a very tough, conventional SUV kind of feel that appeals to those who prefer a design that stands out confidently on the road.

Price & Variants

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is a premium crossover in Maruti's Nexa range and starts at around ?6.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base Sigma variant with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and goes up to about ?11.98 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-end Alpha turbo-petrol automatic variant. More variants include Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta, and Alpha, giving these buyers an excellent range to choose from, as per one's budget and features required. The Fronx is made to give good value for money, as even the mid-spec trims include features such as a touchscreen infotainment system and alloy wheels.

The Venue is priced slightly higher at the base HX2 variant costing around ?8.00 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and topping at ?15.82 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec HX 10 Diesel AT Dual Tone. The Venue gives more power because of the additional set of powertrains available, including one diesel engine, which in turn gives buyers better flexibility, especially the long-distance driving or performance enthusiasts.
